Suggestions For Small Band Instrumentation
Good news in this composition the baritone, trombone, and bassoon carry the same music line. That really helps with the lower end knowing those instruments are covered. Flute Oboe and Trumpet have a lot of the same parts (measure 9). The tenor sax part and the baritone TC part are the same part. Baritone Sax, Bass Clarinet, and Tuba generally carry the same lines as well. The biggest glaring issue with the piece is the flute divisi (starting in measure 12). If you only have one flute or no flutes this can be easily covered by trumpet or clarinet by transposing the part up a major second and adding two sharps. Because of the register in this case you will want clarinet to cover it but trumpet an octave lower may work. The other issue is that this calls for a minimum of 6 percussion to cover all the parts. One or two people from the wind section can easily cover bass drum, triangle, wind Chimes, suspended Cymbal, and tambourine with a little instruction on how to play those instruments.
Program Notes
The dictionary tells us that a tempest is "a violent windstorm, frequently accompanied by rain, snow or hail." In the hands of Robert W. Smith, the scoring supplies all of the fury and rage within the instruments of the band. This work takes us "by the bootstraps" right into the raw power of Mother Nature.
