Suggestions For Small Band Instrumentation
This is a great piece especially if you want to feature a guest artist or a fine musician out of your own ensemble. There are many parts that are automatically being double which makes covering parts easier. For example the F horn and the second trumpet part are in unison for much of the work (alto and first trumpet add sometimes). Also the bass clarinet, baritone sax, trombone, and tuba match up well for most of the work as well as the tenor sax and euphonium pairing up nicely on most parts. The percussion parts require about 4 people to pull off. What makes this a great piece for limited instrumentation is that it is primarily accompaniment and an opportunity to bring in a fine guest soloists from your community for your band students to hear.
Program Notes
The Muhlenberg North Middle School Band, Director Troy Stovall, commissioned Danny Boy for their performance at the 2005 Kentucky Music Educators Conference. Danny Boy is one of over 100 songs composed to the same tune. The author was an English lawyer, Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929), who was also a songwriter and radio entertainer. In 1910 he wrote the words and music for an unsuccessful song he called Danny Boy. In 1912 his sister-in-law in America sent him a tune called the Londonderry Air, which he had never heard before. He immediately noticed that the melody was perfectly fitted to his Danny Boy lyrics, and published a revised version of the song in 1913. As far as is known, Weatherly never set foot in Ireland and this tune with it’s melody became and has been one of the most popular and most recognized songs throughout the world.
