Suggestions For Small Band Instrumentation
There are many things about this piece that make it very workable for small band instrumentation. For example the trombone and baritone parts are the same. Not to mention the optional keyboard part covers melody and bass line notes. So if there is a missing part you can easily have it played on a synthesizer by another student. Parts that match most of the time include; horn with tenor saxophone, alto saxophone with trumpet, oboe with flute are usually in unison. Also bassoon, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, with tuba are matching most of the time. There are no real isolated parts and all the solis are covered in multiple section like at measure 46 where the "soli" is actually played by tenor sax, bassoon, bass clarinet, baritone sax, trombone and tuba. At two before measure 54 the flute part is also doubled in oboe with partial parts in the clarinet. This may be a spot if you have no flute or oboe you would need to transpose the flute part to clarinet. The percussion parts require about 6 individuals to cover but the percussion two part can be covered by a wind section member and the key board part is optional.
Program Notes
A “Call of Duty” can be defined as a task or action that one feels bound to perform. Respect, honor and service above self are the overriding themes in this composition.
