Suggestions for Small Band Instrumentation
You can't score a band much less than this. The only sections that have two parts are clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpets. Also the percussion section has some great parts but they don't require a ton of people. The low brass parts are generally doubled in octaves with the exception of the trombone part that tends to go a bit higher into the chordal harmonies. If you only have baritone and tuba put the baritone on the trombone part. This is helpful not only in getting the harmonies to speak more but the trombone part also has some of the horn cues if you want that covered as well. Take note there is a Alto Solo, flute solo, followed by wood wind soli, trumpet solo, brass soli. Make sure you have sufficient personnel or look to transpose for another instrument what is needed to cover those parts. Overall this is a beautiful and fun piece.
Program Notes
This beautiful arrangement of a favorite Irish folk song utilizes colorful scoring and features solos for alto saxophone, flute and trumpet. This gorgeous melody is also known (with a different set of words) as "The Groves of Blarney", and was featured in a popular 19th-century opera, "Martha", by German composer Friedrick von Flotow.
